Tukwila Police are warning drivers about a new text message scam targeting toll system users, with scammers attempting to collect bogus “unpaid toll bills.”

The scam involves fraudulent messages claiming to come from the Massachusetts third-party tolling system, EZDriveMA:

The texts instruct recipients to pay a small fee—typically less than $6—via a provided link.

Officials warn that this amount is designed to appear inconsequential, enticing recipients to pay quickly rather than contest potential fines or penalties.

However, once payment is made, scammers gain access to personal and financial information, potentially draining victims’ bank accounts.

The scam, initially reported in Massachusetts, has now spread to other areas, including locations far removed from the state, such as the Pacific Northwest.

Authorities urge residents to avoid clicking on suspicious links and to verify any toll-related payments through official state websites or agencies.
