The Tukwila Police Department is reminding drivers to stop when a school bus displays its “Stop” sign, emphasizing both the safety risk and the hefty $500 fine for those who fail to comply.
According to reports from local bus drivers and parents, incidents of vehicles passing stopped school buses have become alarmingly frequent.
“This is 100% unacceptable and can easily lead to a very avoidable tragedy,” the department said in a statement.
Officials urge drivers to be cautious and mindful, especially when children are present at bus stops, walking to school, or in school zones.
Since 2020, Tukwila Police and other law enforcement agencies have observed an increase in reckless driving behaviors across the state, including speeding, disregarding traffic signals, impaired driving, and fatal crashes.
Ignoring a school bus stop sign is not only dangerous but carries severe penalties, and violators will be ticketed if caught.
