The Tukwila Historical Society will launch a new speaker series this month highlighting the personal stories of longtime community members, beginning with a presentation by former city councilmember Joe Duffie.

Duffie will serve as the first guest speaker in the organization’s new “Stories of Arrival” series starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18 in Tukwila.

A longtime Tukwila resident and community leader, Duffie served 36 years on the Tukwila City Council after first being elected in 1981. He was the first African American elected official in the city.

Duffie is also a U.S. Army veteran and later served more than 30 years in the Washington Army National Guard. In addition to his public service career, he worked more than two decades at Tukwila Elementary School, where he mentored students.

During the March 18 event, Duffie will share his personal story and reflect on Tukwila’s history, including experiences that shaped his life in the community he has called home since 1967.

The presentation will take place at the Tukwila Historical Society, located at 14475 59th Ave S, Tukwila 98168, following the organization’s regular meeting.
