Three local cities will recognize this Saturday, Aug. 8, as Cecile Hansen Day in honor of the longtime chairwoman of the Duwamish Tribe, according to information shared by the tribe.
Tukwila, Seattle and Renton are honoring Hansen on her birthday for her service, spirit, perseverance and leadership, the Duwamish Tribe said. Hansen has led the tribe for more than 50 years.
The tribe said Hansen’s leadership has focused on advancing justice and dignity for the Duwamish people, as well as educational outreach, environmental stewardship and elevating the voices of Indigenous peoples across the region.
The Duwamish Tribe said its aboriginal territory includes Seattle, Tukwila, Burien, Renton and Redmond.
City proclamations signed by the mayors of Tukwila, Seattle and Renton recognize Hansen’s contributions.
Hansen is a relative of Chief Si’ahl, also known as Chief Seattle.
