The City of Tukwila has finalized the sale of the George Long property to the King County Flood Control District, preserving a key site along the Duwamish River for environmental restoration rather than private development.
The transaction, completed Monday, June 9, 2025, comes after the City relocated its fleet and facilities operations in 2022 to a newly-renovated site in North Tukwila that offers more space and modern seismic safety features.
The sale was first authorized by the Tukwila City Council on Oct. 17, 2022.
“Without this partnership, the property could have been developed for private use — cutting off the opportunity to return the land to the river,” city officials said in a statement.
Although there had been interest from private developers, the City prioritized the ecological value of the site. Working with the Flood Control District, it sold the land at fair market value for just over $4.5 million. The proceeds have already been factored into Tukwila’s 2025–2026 operational budget.
The property will now be used for a future shoreline restoration project aimed at reconnecting the land to the Duwamish River and advancing long-term environmental goals.
The sale marks a significant step in local efforts to restore habitat and improve resilience along the historically industrialized Duwamish corridor.
