Tukwila Police are warning the public about a recent series of thefts in which suspects reportedly use fake affection to steal jewelry from unsuspecting victims.
Several reports have been filed near 200 Minkler Blvd. (map below) where a man and woman, both described as Asian by the victims, allegedly approach individuals claiming they resemble their parents. The suspects then ask for hugs or attempt to place scarves around the victims’ necks – tactics that result in jewelry going missing.
“In either scenario, the victims end up missing their necklaces and jewelry after being contacted by the pair,” police said in a statement.
Similar incidents have been reported in other jurisdictions, with a majority of the victims being of Asian descent.
Authorities urge the public to be alert and avoid unsolicited physical contact from strangers.
“Remain aware of your surroundings,” police advised. “Please call 9-1-1 immediately if you are approached by anyone attempting this type of theft or if you have been a victim.”
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Tukwila Police.
The investigation is ongoing.
