Georgette (Vikingstad) Valle died peacefully in her sleep at home on July 10, 2024, four months short of 100.

She is survived by her children Christine (Goonetilleke), Peter and CoCo Valle; and grandchildren: Erica, George, Alicia and Bryan.

Georgette served 12 terms as a Washington State Representative, one term on the Burien City Council (1998–2001), and founded the Environmental Science Center at Seahurst Park.

Valle was such an icon that Gov. Jay Inslee instructed that flags be flown at half mast for her on Tuesday, July 30.

Here’s more info on Valle courtesy an interview Jean Pugh did with her for the Highline Heritage Museum in July, 2001:

Georgette Valle, along with her husband Odd, emigrated from Norway to Seattle on November 17, 1951. Odd, a dentist by profession, initially faced challenges in Norway, which led to their decision to move to the United States.

Odd recounted their early days, describing how they settled in the Burien Gardens Apartments after borrowing money from relatives. Despite having limited resources, the couple gradually built their lives in Burien. Odd found work with a dentist of Norwegian descent in White Center and later established his own practice in Burien in 1952.

Georgette, who assisted Odd in his practice until she was five months pregnant, later embarked on a political career. Her journey began with involvement in the Democratic Farmer Labor party and the Evergreen Democratic Women’s Club. She successfully ran for state representative in 1962 and served for 28 years in the legislature, championing various causes, including the Washington Indoor Clean Air Act.

In 1957, Georgette became a charter member of the Lions Club, contributing significantly to the community through various programs. She also played a pivotal role in the Burien City Council, advocating for the comprehensive plan and working towards a cohesive council environment.

Georgette’s legacy includes her efforts in establishing the Environmental Science Center at Seahurst Park, reflecting her commitment to education and environmental stewardship.

Memorial will be Tuesday, July 30

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, July 30, 2024 at the Normandy Park United Church of Christ. Remembrances may be donated to the Environmental Science Center.
