A man was arrested on multiple felony charges after a dangerous New Year’s Eve pursuit involving several collisions in Tukwila, according to the Tukwila Police Department.
Police said officers received multiple reports of a possible impaired driver shortly before midnight Dec. 31 at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Way South and South Boeing Access Road (map below).
Callers reported a man asleep behind the wheel of a stopped vehicle.
Officers arrived and found the man still asleep inside the car, police said. Before waking him, officers placed a tire deflation device near a tire. When the driver woke up, police said he appeared to comply but then fled, driving over the device and deflating a tire.
According to police, the suspect drove the wrong way on Ryan Way and briefly stopped in the roadway. When officers attempted to take him into custody, he fled again and struck several vehicles.
An officer used a precision immobilization technique to stop the vehicle, but police said the suspect continued attempting to flee into oncoming traffic. A second officer then used a patrol vehicle to stop the suspect’s car.
No injuries were reported.
Police said the suspect, who has a prior manslaughter conviction, was booked into jail on charges of DUI, felony eluding and reckless endangerment.
