Tukwila Emergency Management and Puget Sound Fire are inviting residents to register for this spring’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training, a free eight-week course designed to prepare community members to respond to disasters.
Spring 2026 classes begin March 18, with both afternoon and evening sessions available. Most classes are held at the West Hill Kent location. Registration is open at pugetsoundfire.org.
The Community Emergency Response Team program trains volunteers in basic disaster response and organizational skills that can be used during emergencies. According to Puget Sound Fire, the training equips individuals to assist others in their neighborhoods if professional responders are overwhelmed following a major incident.
Training topics include disaster preparedness, search and rescue, medical response, fire safety, hazardous materials awareness and disaster psychology and team organization.
Spring Schedule
Aftemoon (1:00-4:30 p.m.) and Evening(6:00-9:30 p.m.) sessions available. Most classes held on the West Hill, Kent:
- Mar. 18: Intro
- Mar. 25: Disaster Preparedness
- April 1: Search & Rescue
- April 22: Medical 1
- April 29: Medical 2
- May 6: Fire Safety, Hazmat, Terrorism
- May 9: Disaster Psychology & Team Organization
- May 9: Final Simulation (afternoon class)
- May 16: Final Simulation (evening class)
Training is free, but registration is required.
Classes are open to those who live or work in Kent, SeaTac, Burien, Maple Valley, Tukwila and the service areas of Fire District 37 and Fire District 43.
Most classes will be held at Station 73 (West Hill of Kent), with select sessions at Station 74 (East Hill of Kent). Upon registration, participants will receive a confirmation email with the full schedule, class locations, and addresses.
The program is coordinated by Puget Sound Fire in partnership with local emergency management agencies, including the City of Tukwila.
