South King Media Founder/Publisher/Editor Scott Schaefer was awarded first-place honors in the Feature (Soft News) – Small category at the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) 2024 Region 10 Excellence in Journalism Awards.

Schaefer was recognized for his video story titled VIDEO: Burien residents honor retiring US Postal Carrier with special farewell on her final route.”

The piece captured a rainy-day tribute from neighbors as beloved letter carrier Tricia Hanley completed her final delivery round on Oct. 4, 2024, after 30 years on the job in Burien’s Three Tree Point neighborhood.

“Adorable tribute on the mail carrier, who was out on a rainy day, her last day, delivering her mail. Cute,” the judges wrote in their official comments.

The winning entry was among dozens of submissions from professional newsrooms and independent journalists across SPJ’s Region 10, which includes Alaska, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon.

The story struck a chord with the local community for its emotional portrayal of public appreciation and the quiet impact of everyday workers.

“It’s an honor to be recognized again by SPJ Region 10,” Schaefer said. “This award is a reflection of the everyday stories we have the privilege to tell — stories rooted in the lives of our neighbors, small businesses, and community leaders across South King County. It reinforces our belief that local journalism still matters, and we’re proud to be part of a community that values authentic, grassroots, professional storytelling.”

This latest award adds to South King Media’s growing list of accolades for its hyperlocal news coverage in South King County (read about our previous awards here).
